Samburu National Reserve

From Nairobi, visitors head roughly 215 miles north to Samburu National Reserve, a haven for uncommon creatures such as Grevy’s zebra, the flightless Somali ostrich and the gerenuk antelope, with its elongated neck. Long-horned beisa oryx and reticulated giraffes are other unique finds in this rocky, semiarid zone of Kenya.

Verdant forests and areas punctuated by plant life add contrast to the more rugged territory and dehydrated riverbeds of Samburu, which was created in the 1970s. Visit the Uaso Nyiro River for a gander at water-loving crocs or bathing elephants, and keep eyes peeled for a few of the 350-plus bird species that might swoop overhead. Others that call this park home include African buffalo, cheetahs, impalas, waterbucks and lions.
